Aphonopelma seemanni – Stripe Knee Tarantula Care Guide
Aphonopelma seemanni, commonly known as the Stripe Knee Tarantula or Costa Rican Zebra Tarantula, is a popular New World species prized for its striking black or dark brown body contrasted with bold white stripes on the legs. This terrestrial tarantula is native to Central America, where it inhabits burrows in warm, humid environments.
Habitat and Enclosure
The Stripe Knee Tarantula thrives in a horizontally oriented enclosure with ample floor space for burrowing. A secure lid, good ventilation, and a deep layer of slightly moist substrate help mimic its natural habitat. Hides made from cork bark or half logs provide security and reduce stress.
Ideal temperatures range from 22–26°C, with moderate humidity maintained through occasional misting and a clean water dish. Direct heat sources should be avoided to prevent overheating.
Temperament and Handling
Aphonopelma seemanni is generally considered skittish rather than aggressive, often retreating to its burrow when disturbed. Handling is best kept to a minimum to reduce stress and the risk of injury. Observing this species in a well-designed enclosure offers a rewarding, low-interaction experience.
Feeding and General Care
This tarantula feeds primarily on appropriately sized insects such as crickets, roaches, and mealworms. Juveniles are typically fed more frequently than adults, which may eat once a week or less. Regular enclosure maintenance, careful monitoring of humidity, and providing a stable environment support long-term health and successful moults.
