Giant African Millipedes – Archispirostreptus gigas
Giant African millipedes (Archispirostreptus gigas) are among the largest millipede species in the world and are highly valued in terrarium keeping for their calm nature and impressive size. Originating from the tropical regions of East Africa, these invertebrates can reach lengths of up to 30 cm and fascinate with their segmented, armoured bodies and slow, deliberate movements.
Natural Habitat and Behavior
In the wild, Giant African millipedes inhabit warm, humid forests where they live on the forest floor among leaf litter and decaying wood. They are nocturnal, spending the day hidden and becoming active at dusk. As detritivores, they play an important ecological role by breaking down organic material and enriching the soil with nutrients.
Care and Husbandry
In terrarium care, Archispirostreptus gigas requires a spacious enclosure with a deep, moist substrate made of soil, leaf litter, and rotting wood. A constant high humidity and temperatures between 24–28 °C are essential for their well-being. Hiding places made of cork, bark, and roots provide security and support natural behaviour.
Diet and Nutrition
Giant African millipedes feed mainly on decaying plant material, supplemented with fresh vegetables, fruits, and calcium sources. A varied diet supports a healthy exoskeleton and natural growth. Uneaten fresh food should be removed regularly to maintain hygiene in the terrarium.
Peaceful and Fascinating Terrarium Inhabitants
Due to their peaceful temperament and low maintenance requirements, Giant African millipedes are popular with both beginners and experienced keepers. They are best observed at night, when they explore their environment and search for food. With proper care, these impressive invertebrates can live for several years and become a long-term highlight in any invertebrate collection.
