Lasiodora klugi – Bahia Scarlet Birdeater Tarantula
Lasiodora klugi, known as the Bahia Scarlet Birdeater Tarantula, is a large and impressive terrestrial tarantula species originating from the Brazilian state of Bahia. It is among the largest species of the genus Lasiodora and is valued by keepers for its striking coloration and robust appearance.
Adult specimens can reach a leg span of around 20–22 cm. It is characterized by a dark body with reddish-brown to scarlet hairs on the abdomen and legs, giving the species an attractive, contrasting appearance. Although it is a massive spider, it is primarily a display species that can be defensive and make use of its urticating hairs.
In a terrarium, Lasiodora klugi requires plenty of space, a deeper substrate for burrowing, a hide, and slightly elevated humidity with good ventilation. It feeds on crickets, roaches, and other suitable insects of appropriate size. With proper care, it can live for many years, with females often living significantly longer than males.
