Centurion Cockroach – Gyna centurio
The centurion cockroach, Gyna centurio, is a striking species of cockroach known for its distinctive shield-like pronotum and patterned wings. Native to parts of Africa, this species is appreciated by insect enthusiasts for its unusual appearance and relatively calm behaviour compared to many other cockroaches.
Gyna centurio is a medium-sized, winged cockroach with a mottled brown, cream, and sometimes greenish coloration that provides excellent camouflage in leaf litter. Adults are capable of flight, while nymphs are wingless and display darker, more uniform colours. This species is primarily nocturnal, spending daylight hours hidden under bark, leaves, or other natural debris.
In captivity, the centurion cockroach is often kept as a display species due to its attractive patterning and manageable care requirements. It thrives in a warm, humid environment with plenty of hiding places and a substrate that retains moisture. A varied diet of fruits, vegetables, and high-quality dry foods supports healthy growth and reproduction.
As a non-pest species, Gyna centurio plays a beneficial role in its natural ecosystem by helping to break down decaying organic matter. This makes it an important decomposer, contributing to nutrient cycling in forest habitats and supporting overall soil health.
