Armadillidium klugii – Clown Isopods

Armadillidium klugii, clown isopods, are among the most colourful and popular terrestrial isopods in the hobby. Their bold red, yellow, and white markings resemble a clown costume, making them a striking centrepiece for bioactive terrariums, naturalistic vivariums, and dedicated isopod collections.

Care and Habitat

Clown isopods thrive in a warm, moderately humid enclosure with plenty of airflow and hiding places. A well‑established bioactive setup with a mix of leaf litter, decaying wood, cork bark, and other shelters encourages natural foraging and breeding behaviour. They do best with a clear moisture gradient, keeping one side of the enclosure slightly damp and the opposite side more dry so they can regulate their own humidity needs.

A varied diet of high‑quality isopod food, vegetables, leaf litter, and reliable calcium sources supports healthy growth, reproduction, and vibrant coloration. Regularly offering cuttlebone or other calcium supplements helps maintain strong exoskeletons and overall long‑term health in Armadillidium klugii colonies.

Behavior and Compatibility

Armadillidium klugii are classic “pillbug” isopods, well known for rolling into a tight defensive ball when threatened. They are typically active, visible, and engaging to observe, making them a favorite display species. In a carefully planned bioactive setup, clown isopods are often compatible with many small reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates, where they serve as both a clean‑up crew and an attractive addition to the terrarium ecosystem.
