Cylisticus convexus – Curly Isopods
Cylisticus convexus, commonly known as curly isopods, is a hardy terrestrial isopod species valued in bioactive terrariums and naturalistic vivariums. These small crustaceans play an important role as a clean-up crew, breaking down decaying leaves, wood, and organic waste into nutrient-rich soil.
Appearance and Behaviour
Curly isopods are named for their tendency to curl into a tight ball when disturbed. They have a convex, segmented exoskeleton in shades of grey or brown, providing excellent camouflage among leaf litter. Active mostly at night, they prefer to hide under bark, stones, and moss during the day.
Care and Habitat
Curly isopods thrive in a moist, well-ventilated substrate composed of soil, leaf litter, and rotting wood. They require consistent humidity, access to calcium sources, and a varied diet of decaying plant matter and supplemental foods. In a bioactive setup, they help maintain cleanliness and support a balanced micro-ecosystem.
