Porcellio Laevis – Dairy Cow Isopods

Porcellio laevis, dairy cow isopods, are popular terrestrial shades with a distinctive black and white coloration reminiscent of a cow. Thanks to its size, activity and resistance, it is one of the most commonly bred species in terrariums and as part of bioactive tanks.

Characteristics and breeding

Dairy cow isopods grow larger in size than common shadows and multiply quickly, making them an ideal cleaning crew for terrariums with reptiles, amphibians or invertebrates. They require a moist substrate with the possibility of a drier zone, bark shelters and a constant supply of leaf fall and wood.

A varied diet is suitable: dried leaves, beech and oak wood, vegetables, high-quality granules for invertebrates and a source of calcium. With proper care, they create a stable, self-renewing population.

Use in bioactive tanks

Porcellio laevis – dairy cow isopods effectively decompose food residues, droppings and dead plant parts. They help maintain a clean environment, support a healthy substrate microbiome, and reduce the risk of mould. Thanks to their attractive appearance, they are also a decorative element of every bioactive terrarium.
