Headlight Cockroach – Lucihormetica verrucosa
The headlight cockroach, Lucihormetica verrucosa, is a striking tropical species known for the pale, “headlight‑like” spots on its pronotum. Native to South America, this large, slow‑moving cockroach is popular in the exotic pet trade thanks to its calm temperament and unusual appearance.
Appearance and Behavior
Adults display a robust, rounded body with dark brown to black coloration contrasted by creamy or orange spots near the head. These spots resemble glowing headlights, inspiring the common name. Unlike pest cockroaches, this species is non‑invasive, prefers leaf litter habitats, and spends much of its time hiding and foraging at night.
Care in Captivity
Headlight cockroaches thrive in warm, humid enclosures with deep substrate, cork bark, and plenty of hiding places. A diet of fruits, vegetables, and high‑quality insect chow supports healthy growth and reproduction. With proper care, colonies remain clean, odour‑free, and fascinating to observe.
