Porcellio dilatatus – Serrated Isopods

Porcellio dilatatus, commonly known as serrated isopods, are robust terrestrial isopods prized for their size, activity level, and efficiency as a clean-up crew in bioactive enclosures. These isopods thrive in a wide range of conditions and are ideal for both beginners and experienced keepers.

Care and Habitat

Serrated isopods prefer a moist substrate with plenty of leaf litter, cork bark, and hiding spots. A mix of soil, sand, and decaying wood supports healthy burrowing and breeding. Maintaining a moisture gradient, from damp to slightly drier areas, allows the colony to self-regulate and remain active.

Benefits in Bioactive Setups

Porcellio dilatatus are excellent decomposers, breaking down waste, mold, and decaying plant matter. This natural cleaning process supports stable microfauna populations and helps keep terrariums, vivariums, and reptile enclosures cleaner and more balanced.

Feeding and Colony Growth

These isopods accept a varied diet, including leaf litter, fish food, vegetables, and calcium sources such as cuttlebone. With proper nutrition and humidity, colonies grow quickly, providing a reliable population for long-term bioactive projects and breeding setups.
