Porcellio Ornatus Isopods
Porcellio ornatus isopods are colourful, medium-sized terrestrial isopods prized in bioactive terrariums and dedicated isopod collections. Known for their striking patterns and hardy nature, these isopods thrive in well-ventilated enclosures with a balance of moist and dry areas, making them ideal for both beginners and experienced keepers.
These isopods prefer a substrate mix of coco fibre, leaf litter, and decaying wood, which supports natural burrowing and provides essential nutrition. A layer of high-quality leaf litter and pieces of cork bark or bark hides encourages natural behaviour and offers secure hiding spots. Calcium sources such as cuttlebone or crushed eggshells help maintain healthy exoskeleton development.
Porcellio ornatus isopods are omnivorous scavengers that feed on decaying plant matter, biofilm, and supplemental foods like fish flakes, vegetables, and specialized isopod diets. Stable temperatures in the low to mid-20s °C and moderate humidity with good airflow support strong colony growth and vibrant coloration.
In a bioactive setup, Porcellio ornatus contributes to a healthy micro-ecosystem by breaking down waste and aerating the substrate.
