Psalmopoeus emeraldus – Colombian Blonde Tarantula

Psalmopoeus emeraldus, commonly called the Colombian Blonde Tarantula, is a striking New World arboreal tarantula species prized for its emerald-green colouration and contrasting blonde setae. Native to the humid tropical forests of Colombia, this tree-dwelling tarantula is highly valued by experienced keepers for its speed, vivid appearance, and engaging, web-heavy behavior.

Appearance and Natural Habitat

The Colombian Blonde Tarantula displays a deep emerald-green carapace, darker legs, and lighter blonde hairs that create a vivid contrast under both natural and artificial light. In its natural range, this species inhabits warm, tropical forest regions of Colombia, where it shelters in tree hollows, bark crevices, and other elevated hiding spots that maintain consistently high humidity and stable temperatures.

As an arboreal tarantula, Psalmopoeus emeraldus is adapted to vertical environments, using silk to line retreats, create web tunnels, and anchor itself while climbing. Its cryptic green and brown colouration helps it blend into mossy bark, lichen, and foliage, providing effective camouflage from predators and allowing it to ambush passing prey.

Behaviour and Temperament

Psalmopoeus emeraldus is known for being fast, alert, and defensive rather than overtly aggressive. When disturbed, it typically relies on speed and retreat, darting into its webbed hide or climbing higher in the enclosure. If cornered or repeatedly provoked, it may stand its ground and display a threat posture, especially in confined spaces.

This New World arboreal species does not possess urticating hairs, so it relies on threat displays and potential biting as its primary defenses. While bites from the Colombian Blonde Tarantula are rarely medically significant for healthy adults, they can be painful and are best avoided through careful, minimal interaction, the use of tools during enclosure maintenance, and respect for the spider’s speed and reactivity.

Captive Care and Enclosure Setup

In captivity, the Colombian Blonde Tarantula thrives in a vertically oriented enclosure that allows for climbing, webbing, and the creation of elevated retreats. A secure, escape-proof lid is essential due to its agility and speed. Cork bark tubes, branches, and elevated hides encourage natural arboreal behavior, while artificial or live foliage helps provide cover and a sense of security.

  • Temperature: maintained in a warm range suitable for tropical tarantula species, avoiding extreme fluctuations.
  • Humidity: moderate to high, with good cross-ventilation to prevent stagnant, overly damp conditions and mould growth.
  • Substrate: moisture-retentive substrate such as coco fiber or a soil mix, kept slightly damp but never waterlogged.
  • Hides: vertical cork bark, branches, and foliage to create shaded, secure areas for webbing and retreat building.

Regular spot cleaning, access to fresh, clean water, and stable environmental conditions support long-term health in captivity. Overly frequent disturbance, tapping on the enclosure, or unnecessary rehousing should be avoided to reduce stress and encourage confident, visible behaviour.
