Red Cherry Shrimp – Neocaridina davidi
Red Cherry Shrimp (Neocaridina davidi) are popular freshwater dwarf shrimp prized for their bright red coloration, peaceful nature, and ease of care in community aquariums. Originating from Taiwan, these hardy invertebrates are ideal for both beginners and experienced aquarists seeking an active and colorful clean-up crew.
Care, Water Parameters and Tank Setup
Red Cherry Shrimp thrive in stable, well-cycled aquariums with gentle filtration and plenty of hiding places such as plants, mosses, and rocks. Optimal water parameters include a temperature of 20–26°C, pH between 6.5–7.8, and low levels of ammonia and nitrite. Regular water changes and careful acclimation help maintain a healthy, breeding colony.
These shrimp are omnivores and readily graze on biofilm, algae, and high-quality shrimp foods. A dedicated shrimp tank or peaceful nano community setup allows them to display natural behaviors and vibrant coloration.
Breeding and Color Grading
Neocaridina davidi breed readily in stable conditions, with females carrying eggs under their abdomen until hatching. Selective breeding has produced various color grades, from low-grade red to intense “fire red” and “painted” varieties. Strong genetics, good nutrition, and stress-free environments support vivid colors and robust populations.
