Thai Vinegaroon Scorpions & Their Defence

Thai vinegaroon scorpions are fascinating nocturnal arachnids found in humid forests and rural areas of Thailand. Despite their fearsome appearance, they are generally harmless to humans and play an important role in controlling insect populations, especially cockroaches and other small invertebrates.

When threatened, Thai vinegaroon scorpions secrete a distinctive vinegar-like scent to scare off predators. This defensive spray contains acetic acid, which creates the sharp, sour odour that deters potential attackers without the need for a venomous sting. The ability to release this vinegar scent helps the vinegaroon avoid conflict and survive in the wild.

These unique scorpions prefer dark, moist hiding places such as under rocks, logs, and leaf litter, their primary defence remains the characteristic vinegar secretion that gives them their common name.
