Vermiculite - 6L

Vermiculite - 6L - Fine grade

Vermiculite is good for where you need stable high humidity for long periods of time. With some South American and Asian species we mix in 20-30% vermiculite with coco fibre to help keep the humidity high. Though bear in mind no spiders like stagnant conditions so make sure you also have a good airflow.

It is also a popular substrate for Phasmid and Mantis keepers.

Vermiculite can also be used for incubating reptile eggs.

Vermiculite

What Is Vermiculite?

Vermiculite is a lightweight, heat-expanded mineral widely used in reptile and amphibian care. Its porous structure holds moisture while allowing air flow, making it ideal for maintaining stable humidity in terrariums and for safely incubating eggs. It is inert, non-toxic, and easy to sterilize.

Using Vermiculite in Terrariums

In terrariums, vermiculite is often mixed with other substrates to improve moisture retention and aeration. It helps create a humid microclimate, supports healthy shedding in reptiles, and reduces the risk of mold when used correctly. Vermiculite can also be used in plant sections of bioactive enclosures to support root growth.

  • Mix with soil or coco fiber to boost humidity control.
  • Use as a base layer in humid hides for snakes and lizards.
  • Improve drainage and root health in planted terrariums.

Vermiculite for Egg Incubation

Vermiculite is a popular incubation medium for reptile and amphibian eggs because it holds moisture evenly and cushions delicate shells. When mixed with water to the correct ratio, it maintains a stable, humid environment that supports proper embryo development and reduces the risk of desiccation or drowning.

  • Combine vermiculite with water by weight for consistent moisture.
  • Partially bury eggs to keep them stable and evenly humid.
  • Use in sealed or semi-sealed incubation containers to limit evaporation.

Benefits and Best Practices

Key benefits of vermiculite include excellent moisture retention, good aeration, and resistance to compaction. For best results, vermiculite should be moistened but never waterlogged, and periodically checked for mould or contamination. Clean handling and proper storage extend its usefulness in both terrariums and incubation setups.
