Vesicularia dubyana – Java Moss
Vesicularia dubyana, known as Java Moss, is an unpretentious aquarium plant ideal for beginners and advanced aquarists alike. It grows slowly to moderately fast, tolerates a wide range of water parameters well and does not require the addition of CO2 or strong lighting, making it suitable for most freshwater aquariums.
Java Moss easily attaches to roots, stones, and decorations, creating a natural, overgrown aquarium look. It provides shelter for fry, shrimp and small fish, serves as a spawning site while improving water quality by absorbing excess nutrients and promoting a stable biological balance in the tank.
Growing and Using Java Moss in an Aquarium
- Water temperature: 20–28°C – suitable for most tropical aquariums
- pH: 5.5–8.0 – tolerates soft and harder water well
- Lighting: low to medium – grows even in less lit tanks
- Location: on decorations, like a carpet in the foreground, on roots and stones, or on the back wall of the aquarium
To attach Java Moss, a line, thread or special glue for aquarium plants is used. After a few weeks, the moss will firmly attach itself and begin to form dense growths. Regular trimming helps maintain a compact shape, prevents the filter from becoming overgrown and promotes dense, healthy growth. Java Moss is a popular choice for natural aquascaping, shrimp, and breeding tanks due to its hardiness, decorative appearance, and hiding place function for aquatic animals.
